Germany’s Foreign Ministry says a German-American journalist who was freed this week after more than two years being held captive in Somalia is receiving medical care at the German embassy in Nairobi.

Spokeswoman Sawsan Chebli told The Associated Press on Wednesday that “given the circumstances, he’s doing well.”

Michael Scott Moore was flown to Kenya’s capital after being freed in Somalia on Tuesday.

Chebli said a special Foreign Ministry crisis group and German federal police had worked “very closely” with American authorities on trying to win his freedom since he was kidnapped in January 2012 while researching a book on piracy.
She would not comment on what led to his release or on reports that a ransom had been paid, beyond saying “the German government cannot be blackmailed.”
