AMISOM to use Somali National University and Al-Jazeera beach as a dumping site

Mogadishu (Alshahid)-African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is planning to use the Somali National University’s Gahayr campus and the beautiful beach of Al-Jazeera in Mogadishu as a dumping site for their waste, Alshahid Network reports here.

Gahayr campus is a military base for some 1,000 Burundian troops and is also the Contingent’s Head Quarter. The orientation training for the newly arrived AMISOM troops also takes place in this campus.

Currently AMISOM dumps their wastes in old buildings adjacent to Al-Jazeera beach and sometimes burn the waste in pit holes.

According to the source, AMISOM requested the Transitional Federal Government for approval of establishment of two land-fill sites at University campus and South of Mogadishu Airport for dumping ash, which they claim to be in line with environmental standards.

The Somalia leadership as well as the academic community and civil society, are yet to speak about this issue.

If the dumping sites are established at the Gahayr Campus, it will definitely erode the reputation of Somali National University, which has remained the fountain of knowledge for a long time in Somalia.
